Help! I have a houseful of fleas. I have an English Bulldog and 2 cats. I have seen many fleas ON them and have seen a few on me. Gross. Now, who has used Program and is it really effective? Thanks! I'm at my wit's end here!!
I use K9 Advantix as it takes care of Fleas, Ticks and Mosquitos. Many products don't also work on Mosquitos. I would call your vet. You can buy at Petsmart, if your store also has a vet. You probably want to get an exterminator too if they are throughout your house and in the carpet. Just make sure the exterminator uses pet friendly chemicals.
Oh I feel bad for you. I hate fleas too. You may have to bomb the house if they have gotten out of control. Usually by the time you can see them on you, they are everywhere. Especially the carpets. Good Luck!
Ok I have used the topicals but the prob w/them is that they only kill the adult fleas, what about the eggs in the carpets? Also the Program pill sterilizes the female flea so she can't lay more eggs, sounded good to me :)
No that you mention the eggs of the fleas - I remembered that Duncans heartworm meds kill flea eggs or maybe it is sterilizes the females. I cannot remember the name of his heartworm stuff right now, but it is a bit more expensive than other heartworm preventive meds but I think it well worth it to have the fleas controlled too. ugghhh - i wish i could remember the name of his meds. I can see the box in my head and can't remember the name.
What I hate about program is that all it does is sterliize fleas and stops their development. It doesnt actually kill them. Which makes it useless IMHO. Nothing in my experience will kill fleas faster than advantage. Nearly every flea will be dead within a couple of hours of application. Frontline Plus kills fleas, their larvae and their eggs. And it kills ticks. The flea merely has to touch the dogs hair to be poisoned, so even shed hair is toxic to fleas. Regular frontline topspot kills fleas and their larvae but not their eggs. The frontline products last longer and are more waterproof. Advantage and advantix both kill fleas and their larvae, but not the eggs. However, they work so darned fast it's really good in that regard. Advantix is dogs only. I suggest you get some advantage for dogs and some for your cats. (Never use a flea product for dogs on cats, or vice versa, ou could poison your pet). That'll be the fastest way of getting rid of the fleas. Wash any bedding that the cat and dog may have slept on and vacuum the couch, cushions and any carpetted floor. Do this for about 3 weeks, regularly, and all the flea pupae (which is basically indestructible) will hatch and your flea problem will be gone.
There is also a pill which can be purchased from your vet called Capstar which works in conjunction with Advantage to kill fleas. Capstar begins working in about 30 minutes and it kills every flea & egg. I use seven dust 10% around the foundation of my house and throughout the yard and I use seven dust 5% on my dogs bedding if I find fleas. I use a homemade mixture in a spray bottle of Citrus oil extracts or citrus-peel extracts mixed with a few drops of tea tree oil. I just spray it on a couple of times a week the stuff works wonders as a preventative you can also mist it on carpeting after thoroughly vacuuming. We have gone three years successfully with no fleas! *Seven Dust can be found at any feed store it is meant to kill pest on poultry and livestock my parents and grandparents have always used it on their ranch to kill fleas, ticks, roaches, spiders, flies and just about any other pest you can think of. It's just a powder that comes in either a 5% or 10% strength. The orange oil spray is as follows *NOTE* TEA TREE OIL CAN BE HARMFUL TO CATS DO NOT USE THIS SOLUTION ON CATS IF IT CONTAINS TEA TREE OIL. IF USED ON CATS WITHOUT TEA TREE OIL DILUTE THE ORANGE OIL BY TWO GALLONS OF WATER INSTEAD OF ONE. Orange Oil Recipe Put the peelings of 5-6 large oranges (no pulp) in a gallon glass jar. Fill the jar with water, cover and let set at room temperature for one week. After a week, strain off the juice (orange oil). You may have to strain more than once. Use one cup of this “orange oil” per gallon of water add 1-2 drops of Tea Tree Oil (Depends on size of dog if you have a small dog only one drop to half a drop.) Add 1 part Joy (regular or unscented) dish detergent to 4 parts of Orange extract. Bathe your dog with this solution to kill fleas initially. It will kill fleas almost immediately. After the fleas are gone use only the Orange oil extract diluted with water in a spray bottle spray on 1-2 times a week as a preventive. All types of citrus work, but oranges seem to work best.
3 way program..no fleas for 8 mo. if you do it 1/ Spray yard w/ hose attachment insect spray of mentioned brand or other. 2/Wash dog. Apply Zodiac flea spray W/ Igr,or precor 3/Use Zodiac premise spray throughout the house I once asked a pet store owner why he did not carry these products. He replied you would not come back then every week/month for a new product. Vet kem& Zodiac are same...Let me know if you are still confused. I have not seen fleas for years...my pets wear no chemical, possibly cancer causing product...
Living in south Florida, fleas are a BIG problem, especially with stray cats in the neighborhodd and woods (well the USED to be woods) behind us. I have my crew on Front Line Plus, we make sure the yard is treated and yes, like Kittysmom we use Zodiac. We used to use Adam's, but they changed the formula and it no longer works. The Zodiac is WONDERFUL! As kittysmom said, you must treat the yard AND the house as well as the pets to get rid of the problem thoroughly. If not, they will just be back in a few days.
I've never tried it on the animals, but on te couple of occasions when the neighbor was feeding about 2 dozen feral cats and they would "wander" over..we had fleas in the yard. For some reason, they (fleas) leave me alone, but my husband, kids and grandkids are HIGHLY sensitive to their bites. Storm (our 2nd black lad, which we had at that time) would not be bothered by them as he had protection. However having the kids and dog go in and out, brought them in to the house. We used to zodiac on the yard and in the house at the same time, no more problem. We also treat twice a year to keep the Pyrs in a clean environment (in the yard) and so far, knock on wood...no problems at all with them. I'm not too sure how well it would work on the dogs themselves, as I said, I've never tried it.
the heartworm prevention that has the program added to it is called sentinel. it is interceptor and program combined. for immediate kill of the adult fleas you would need to use advantage or frontline. advantage works quicker and better then frontline for fleas in my experience. program doesn't actually sterilize the fleas, what it does is it interferes with the development of the flea inside the egg. it prevents them from forming the little tooth they need to use to break out of the eggshell. so the eggs don't hatch, thus no flea infestation. program is more for environment control then it is for actually getting rid of the live fleas. if using advantage and program at the same time, you should see a reduction in the flea population in your home in a couple of months. you could use the advantage and program together and then use a premise spray on the dogs bedding and furniture. fleas seem to be particularily bad this year. since coming out with all these topicals the flea population has been virtually nil for the past few years. i wonder now if they haven't evolved an immunity to these products.
