Is it safe for dogs and cats to be on flea medication (the type that you put on their coat) all the time? Can I just continue to put it on once a month every month or are their any side effects that could hurt them? Oh, and btw it is the medication you get from a vets office, not the type you can buy at Walmart. Thanks! Anna
If you live where its really cold, once the temperature gets below freezing, you can take a break from getting it. But if it warms up, the fleas can come back out again. I use it every single month and have never had an issue with it. If you live in the deep south you really have no choice but to either deal with fleas (and possible tapeworms and other nasty things that come from fleas) or use the flea product every month. I've had far worse experiences with flea infestations than I ever have had with the medications for them. I hvae yet to have a bad reaction, though I do know they happen. And your dog having a bad reaciton to 1 medication doesn't mean it will have the same reaction to all medications, they have different ingredients.
Anna.................You have to get Advantage, Frontline and the other good flea medication from a vet or online. They do not sell it at Wal-Mart. You are not supposed to use it on very young puppies. I use it every month unless it is below freezing as Minniyar says, which it rarely is where I live.
