Does anyone have experience with training bloodhounds for the jr search and rescue? My Granddaughter is 12 and interested in this type of trainning. I am thinking of looking for a bloodhound that is in rescue and needs a good home and is trainable for a young girl. Any words of advice are always welcome.
What an interesting thing for her to get into. Hope you have some luck finding the right dog and the right courses. I admire that you are taking such an interest in your grandchild she is one lucky girl :)
Bloodhounds are not really good dogs for Search and rescue because of their size, plus they are not very agile. If you want to do search and rescue you'd be much better off with a Shepard or retriever. However if you want to do Tracking, the bloodhound is one of the best dogs for this. Tracking is very different from search and rescue. If this is your first dog, I would not even consider a bloodhound. You would be much better off with a dog that is more easily trainable. Bloodhound are stuborn and dirven by their sense of smell.. Do some research before deciding on a dog, make sure it is a dog that will fit into your life style.
