I am thinking of adopting this 11 wk old pup. Hes got probably one of the worst cases of demodex I have seen. His whole body has almost no hair. Anyway If I do adopt him It will be around 1st of January when he will be ready. Does anyone know how often demodex comes back? Or know of any places I can read up on it. I am gona google it and see what happens too. My sister lost her blue heeler to this about 4 months ago. I get so attached and want to know what to expect. But I really would like to adopt this pup. Should I go for it anyway. What do all of you think?
i would adopt him if it were me. demodex is usually brought on by stress on the immune system, if the animal already has a weakened immune system. i have seen some pretty bad cases and none of the dogs have died from it. demodex is the correct spelling. try googling demodectic mange
One of my dogs had Demodex when she was about 4 months. She was stressed. She 2 Mitiban dips and it was gone. The dips are extremely harsh,I would see if there is another alternative for treatment. If I had known then how harsh they where ,I would've asked about another form of treatment. The mange never came back.
To tell you the truth, they really don't know if it is hereterity or not. Most cases of them having it before the age of one it is, but afterwards, brought on by stress, I think if you keep the dog in the best health possible it's the best preventive. I also heard of this guy who took his dog to the Texas A&M vet school, and the dog had it really bad and they suggested him put it down, but he didn't want to so he took it home and applied aloe vera to it daily, and he swears it cleared it up, you never know! It's not life threating and definately something that can be controlled and treated, why can't you get it till Jan.?
My sisters pitbull had demodex after she had her puppiesfrom all the stress(she had it one time when my sis first got her). The vet gave her a collar(kinda like a flea collar but it wasnt) that she had to get once a month for 3months she has not had it since them. The puppy my sister kept from the litter has it to. She developed it right after all her litter mates was gone( she whined for all most 2 days because she missed them so bad).
I wish I had known about some of this stuff before I could of told my sister. especially that aloe vera thing just to see if it worked. My sisters dog had been having trouble since before she got the litter I guess. Cause he was sick from the beginning. When the vet finally found the mite he was sooo sick, he put him on ivermec but it wasnt working . But not only had he got demodex he had a bacteria too. from allergies I guess. She always had to keep Ace on a shot. But anyway he was really sick and she coulnt watch him suffer. I was worried that is might come back. But I have thought about it and I want him regardless. He needs a home and a very good one. I will give him that. Faye_girly they said I cant get him till January because they want to put him through the treatments I guess. I would rather take him now but I cant. I just wanted to be prepared. Have been doing some reading though...
Why am I not seeing what I just posted? That is really weird, it shows I posted but there is none. Thanks everyone for your replys. Faye_Girly I cant bring him home yet I guess because they want him to go through his treatment there. I just wanted to know what everyone thought, I should do. I get really attached and was worried what might happen in the future, When I shouldnt be. This pup could be fine after his treatment, and he needs a home regardless of the situation. So after reading everyones answers and doing some thinking about it, and also some reading I decided I want to give him a hime. Thanks everyone!!
One of my fosters Bruiser (APBT) had demodex mange. He was treated successfully and adopted the last I heard he has just about grown all his hair back. You have to be careful though some treatments can be so harsh that they actually further the problem and weaken the immune system. Good luck! I say go for it! Here's a picture of Bruiser when I first got him. http://photobucket.com/albums/v338/reginaha/Foster%20Babies/?action=viewĄt=Bruiser003.jpg
