What did the vet say when you brought him in for his well puppy exam? I'm sure that by now, you have taken him in and had him examined. I would follow the vets advice. Basset_LoVer

Put it in a sink of soapy water. I wouldn't recommend putting the plug end in the water though. One of my co-workers (blind since birth) dumped his coffee onto his keyboard and the engineer immersed it in a sink full of soapy water and then rinsed it...
