I am constantly telling people to go to the shelter or rescue group to find a "child's dog." What has worked for many is to get a shepherd mix, preferably a bitch, at least three years old.

I definitely like dogs better as a group. That said, my three Siamese mixes are just like dogs. They follow me around, give kisses, come when called and snuggle almost anytime I need it.

I'd spend some time at an animal shelter. Besides getting a few books on choosing a breed, this would give you an idea of what dogs you like and what kind of temperament you are interested in.
