I would definately get Glucosamine/Chondroitin. You can purchase it at any drug store (human form) it's perfectly safe. You'll find it in the Vitamin Isle.

A reputable breeder will breed for health and temperament. I don't see much difference between a BYB dog, and a shelter dog. Other than lining the pockets of irresponsible breeders.
