Does the dog have a health problem that causes him pain? Or is it just that he sleeps all day, and stays up all night? If its the second, it seems like she would be putting him to sleep so he would no longer inconvenience your friend. Dogs can live...

I know, at least with the Mastiff, they bond with and protect the wife first, children second and then the husband.
