My dog used to get brown tear stains until I switched him to grain-free kibble. I buy the EVO small bites. In the past I gave him Timberwolf Organics' grain-free formulas, which also worked well.

If it is a choke/pinch collar, then yes, it should be removed.

A standard nylon or leather collar that closes with a buckle is unlikely to cause trouble.
