has anyone had experience with wireless fences and their effectiveness in containing cats and kittens??

we just got an eight week old kitten, and would like to keep him outside. Will he be OK outside with other animals like skunks, squirels, etc...

and how do these wireless fences work? are they effective in keeping the pet in the backyard...
