I agree it is more than likely periodontal disease. Most kibble fed dogs/cats have it by age 2.

I raw feed, which solves the bad breath problem, along with a lot of other problems kibble fed dogs have, but if you don't want to actually go...

I know this odor very well. My Aussie and first BC had it for over a year, along with severe itching, bald spots, oozing sores.

I took them to three different Vets and they all said, "allergies" and prescribed anti-histamines, cortizone...

Have you considered an outdoor kennel with suitable shelter from the elements, to put him into while you are at work?

I actually prefer that, when possible, to being inside in a crate, because they are out in the fresh air, and can potty...
