Newfies are water dogs and love water. Putting that big of a dog in a cage is really hard on them, you should try building a run for the dog so he has more space.

Yes, giving him his own place to sleep at night is a good idea. He may not like it at first, but try giving him something to keep himself entertained. For example, put some peanut butter in a kong ball. Or save special toys for bed time
