Well I have two basstes. One is more vocal than the other. They generally only bark when someone comes down the driveway, but it's not a sure thing. They can someitmes bark to hear their own voice, or bark at the wind.

I would recommend the patch. Just make sure that you place it in a different spot every day. Don't want to mess with their skin.
As for them saying they have rights you might want to remind them who's alpha in the house.
