My bf dog was blind in her old age. At first she had trouble getting around, but she learned to adapt and lived to be 18. I think that animals adapt to their handicaps better than humans sometimes.

What the spaniel was doing is resource guarding. This behavior is not completely fixable, but is managable. My dog Mollie has this problem. There is no possible way I would label her agressive either.
