If you did "research", you wouldn't be breeding dogs that are given to you, or dogs that someone else no longer wanted. Do you even know what diseases/health problems minpins are prone to? Have you ever been to any shows, talked to any "real" breed...

Common sense would tell me to keep the dog crated when he is home alone.

We never had a problem with it. Each dog has to "earn" the right not to be crated. We never left ours alone uncrated till they were each close to 1 year old. We weren't worried about accidents-they each were perfectly reliable about housetraining....
