My Rotti split his nail pretty bad a couple years ago. I did take him to the vet and she put him on antibiotics and I soaked his paw 2 times a day in warm ebson salt water.

I did the yelp ignore and redirect method too and it worked. I have never used force with my dogs, and they have no problem with knowing I am the leader.
