I had a dog that liked his crate also. It was his "safe place" He didn't like to be shut in it, although as punishment he would be, but he'd go there to lie down.

Perhaps fear? I would keep him in a crate or another room when you have guests over. If someone were to report the bites, it could end badly for your pup.
