I think in todays world its inevitable that older children will be out trick and treating, its just not safer for the younger ones anymore. My kids are aged 10 and 11 and I certainly wouldn't let them out on their own at night tricking and treating....

maybe try moving the crate to your bedroom and see if this makes a difference - to see if its the crate he's not happy with or being on his own. Maybe a long walk in the late evening will help him sleep longer during the night.

You could try using a throw which you could wash regularly. Alternatively you could purchase a dog mattress and train them to sleep on the floor.
