With our Dobe, this was a huge problem at first. A sharp "NO" and then giving her an acceptable chewing item such as a favorite toy or rawhide chew worked well.

Yes, she's got fair manners as taught. Still have to discorage from jumping up on people though. The only commands she knows are "quit", or "come here". The first thing we had to teach was not to play bite. She has not just been treated as a pet. But...
