My boss told me about dogs sniffing out cancer the other day. It is amazing how many things dogs can sense/experience that we can't.

We go camping a lot so we can bring the dog with. When we stay in a hotel or overnight at a relative's house, we don't bring the dog with.

I agree. Find out what works as a reinforcer for your dog and then use it. What matters is the end product, you gan get there in many different ways - depending on your dog's personality and what you think is a good way to train him.

I think it is a good idea to have different options for training, and use different techniques depending on not only the personality of the dog, but different behaviors and situations within the same dog. Perhaps training him to sit will work best...
