Coloring looks like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, but it is hard to say for sure without seeing the ears.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. That is sad. Don't feel guilty - I know that it is hard not to, but you did the right thing. It will get better over time. Trust me, I've been there. AbbiesMOM - that is a nice poem.

Allergy shots sound like a good idea. Also, maybe ask your vet about whether it is possible to give dogs antihistamines. Something like benadryl (diphenhydramine) might work well on itching/hives. In humans, at least, it does not have long-term ...

We used Heartgard Plus for prevention. I don't know what you would use for treatment once the dog already has heartworm.
