If I remember correctly, we occasionally fed our dog peanuts without any major problems. We also fed her peanut butter when she was younger. No major problems there, either.

As others have mentioned earlier, it could be something left over from someone's fireworks. Maybe they didn't want to burn the driveway or grass and used that pie tin. That would explain the black residue. Does it smell like sulfur or gunpowder?...

I'm in Minneapolis, MN right now and we can see haze in the sky. The TV weather report says it is blowing south from those fires in Alberta.
