What don't you try putting the leash on the couch beside you and then later have your dog come up on your lap and pet him and give love then put the leash on. Don't take your dog outside at that time just let the dog drag the leash around so he learn...

I agree with Dusty with mixed dogs you can never tell what they will look like.
On another note, that dog is so ugly he is so cute...lol!
