I dont know that I would call them rare, just not an everyday household word like a Lab....see them quite often at the UKC shows.

Was this a first for this particular cross? Meaning have you used either of the parents previously together or with another at all and what was the result then?

While I agree the pound is not the place for a pregnant dog....maybe you should look into sending her to a Shih-Tzu rescue?

I'm glad you stepped up and took her, but she needs vet care, as will the puppies. if you cannot afford to take her...

If he is unregistered, or just ACA, you will likely not generate much interest in him as a stud.

They all have their ups and downs, slow times, etc....I have come across somer over time that I dont care for and I simply stop visiting them.
