10 hours is a LONG time, could you get someone in to let them out or hire a dog walker to come once a day? You could buy an x-pen that way they have room to move around but not as much freedom.

Usually digging is a sign of boredom, or lack of exercise. I suggest more physical and mental stimulation as well as not leaving him unattended so that he can't dig..... Filling the holes with poop sometimes helps.
