Go to a public library or bookstore with your grandmother and pick out some all breed books to check out some of the smaller breed dogs. That way she can decide what dogs she likes the look of and learn a bit about them. Terriers are good with kids...

I'd point you in the direction of Innova, Nutro, and Canidae brand dog foods. I've used Canidae, it's a very very good food. Nutro and Innova aren't avaible in my area but a lot of Akita breeders and owners I know swear by it.
