Msboxers is right, Advantage and Advantix can be used on puppies that are as young as 7 weeks old and weighing more than 1 lb. Frontline Plus can only be used on puppies that are 8 weeks or older and weighing at least 11 lbs.

Go to a public library or bookstore with your grandmother and pick out some all breed books to check out some of the smaller breed dogs. That way she can decide what dogs she likes the look of and learn a bit about them. Terriers are good with kids...
