Contact a local shelter or rescue. They can help you decide what dog is best for you. Most have people who kow the dogs and their temperments etc., which makes things a lot easier. They also have a good idea about shedding, etc.

I would get in touch with your local lab rescue and see if you can foster a dog. If it works out you can adopt it, if not you aren't committed. Many shelters also use foster homes.

You are probably out of luck. Sounds like a byb or miller and they usually don't do anything once the dog has left their property. Not ALL are like this - but if they haven't responded to you then I doubt they will.

I can imagine very few dogs being happy living only inside. But I also think that when dogs are outside they should be leashed or in a fenced in area. Any dog can attack if provoked enough.
Also, a roaming dog can get into unexpected trouble...
