So where did you get him? From a breeder, pet store, shelter or rescue?

Was he sick when you got him? What kind of stomach bug did the vet say it was that he has? Is he up to date on his vaccines?

Hopefully he will start ...

Illusion is correct. You get what you pay for when it comes to healthy, quality dogs; even for pets.

If you're not going to show, a shelter or rescue program would be wonderful.

Yes, a sheet works well and you cover the crate; just like people do with bird cages at night.

Puppies can sleep on average 18 hours per 24 hour period. (Adults can sleep 15-16 hours per 24 hours.)

I think he just has anxiety separation; not uncommon. Try to cover the crate at night and see if that helps.
