I haven't seen my dogs eat dirt, but they do like to have a taste now and then when there's some garden mulch spread out on the ground.

I doubt the dog was in any discomfort. More likely thought if her as an annoyance. Probably why you hear of so many kids being bit by the family dog.

Personally, I would wait a few years before getting a dog with your kids being so young and all. I would wait at least until they're all school age. Usually dogs in situations like this end up confined 24/7 in the backyard or end up being re-homed or...

Not that I would want to feed my dogs a steady diet of grapes, but my dog shares a few grapes with me from time to time without any problems. He thinks he's eating candy. Also we have a rather large grapevine in our backyard, not that I ever see them...
