It just looks like a big oversized ball, maybe it is so big it is supposed to resemble another animal, that the dog is supposed to want to herd? Does it have a scent of another animal?

It sounds like he is just trying to protect her. With such a bad attack as that, he does not want to see her get hurt again. Especially that he is not neutered, he is more protective over her.
