Your water heater guy scenario is VERY familiar to me! That is how it goes anytime any stranger comes to my house. Though my dog is not a guarding breed, I, too, wondered if she was interested in protecting me at all.

My mom has 2 white GSDs. No hearing problem , but one has a pancreatic dysfunction. (She can't digest food unless you put special enzymes on it to break it down.) I don't think this is a common problem in them, though.

NILF means nothing in Life is free. It is very effective way to teach your dog her position in your family (pack). Here is a site a found with some info about it.
