I believe most small dogs have these glands on their butt. I wouldn't think that surgery would be necessary, unless it is secreting a fluid that has a horrible odor. My groomer "pops" my dogs glands and it takes care of the problem.

I have a 2yr old pug. She is wonderful. She is more laid-back than a rat terrier, although still has a fireball personality. So far, she has had no health problems although she gets her regular check ups and shots.
