Try ignoreing her when she whines, and only verbally reward her when she shows any confidence, like walking away from you or laying in her bed. Feed or bait her bed so she is rewarded for laying in it or just standing in it.

The biggest mistake people make is useing a punishment, the dog needs to understand the connection to get a result. The knee really is just casueing the dog to fear you doing it, and doesn't always cure the problem, just makes the dog afraid of you. ...

Could you try a Vegatarian diet?
May cost you less.
Protein is harder for dogs to digest, but a Vegetarian diet may be easier.
Medi-cal has a Vegatarian diet, also there is a web site called Balanceit.com or .ca not sure, it has diets...
