Whenever my springer spaniel got nervous or was suffering from allergies, she would lick the heck out of her white feet and turn them a sort of brown-red color. Our vet always knew she had been licking by the color of her feet.

The vet I was going to use in northern CA charges $350 which includes microchipping. Still sounds rather high to me but he does a great job so I guess it's worth it if you really want the ears done.
