Definatly don't give him to a free home. make sure you find the RIGHT people not just anybody. Springers need tons of exercise and physical activity, make sure the family you place him with is willing to give that.

Poor baby, thank God she has new owners like you have that have so much patience, love, and understanding. I am sure she will come out of her shell adventually, just give her time. Lots and lots of love. treat her like a queen :)
