Directions for Testing pHRead thoroughly before testing.Fill a clean test tube with 5 ml of water to be tested (to the line on the tube).Add three drops of Indicator Solution, holding dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniformity of drops.Cap the test tube and invert tube to mix solution. Do not hold finger over open end of tube, since body acid may effect the pH of the test solution.Determine the pH reading by the color of the solution against those on the pH Color Chart. The tube should be viewed against a white background in a well-lit area. Rinse test tube with clean tap water after each use.Reading the Results:Recommended Safe pH LevelsFish can survive in a pH range from 6.0 to 9.0. In a freshwater aquarium, a slightly acidic pH (6.6 to 7.0) is recommended for egg-laying fish, a slightly alkaline pH (7.2 to 7.6) for live-bearing fish and goldfish, and a neutral pH (7.0) for a community aquarium.
