  • In the days of King Henry, the use of any horse under fifteen hands was strictly prohibited. Thus, horses or ponies, such as the Welsh Pony, were destroyed. Henry was quoted as saying, "the nags of small nature were to be taken care of, and any horse that couldn't carry a soldier and his armor were deemed useless." Fortunately, for the Welsh Pony, this law or rule didn't last long, so the population of the Welsh did not suffer very badly thanks to Queen Elizabeth. Today, the Welsh Pony is well liked by people of royalty. They have also become very popular for every day riding. There is some evidence that points to the Welsh Pony as being the unknown hero, such as being the horse pulling the roman chariots into battle and working in coalmines. Some of these ponies never even saw the light of day, being born and bred there. Being favored by another king, Edward VII, made the popularity of the Welsh grow even faster.

  • Most of the Welsh Ponies originated in Wales. During the time of the Industrial Revolution before the modern engine came along, the ones that still remained in Wales were commonly used for businessmen that went on trips. The Welsh would have to endure a thirty-five mile uphill trail and it did so without buckling under the pressure by completing the task in less than three hours. This also proved to be a way to select a certain few for breeding and racing. It was in this time that the first set of well-known Welsh Studs was born; they went by such names as "Comet", "Meteor, and "Express".

  • There is a debate on who is the oldest living pony ever recorded, one was said to have lived to be fifty-four years old, when another in Gower Peninsula was said to have lived to the old age of 66 years old.

  • Because of the Welsh Ponies natural intelligence and gentle nature, it makes them the idea horse for training as they are quick learners.

  • There is one Welsh Stallion that is said to be the foundation of the modern pony's size since the 1900's; it went by the name of Dyoll Starlight. He was the combination of the Welsh and Arab breeds, out of this came the section B type: Tan-y-Bwlch Berwyn. Like some other species of horse and pony, they are sometimes categorized in different classes by letters such as A, B, C, and D. They are sorted into these different classes by their size and may not exceed a certain size for each class. They go from biggest to smallest with section A being the smallest and section D being the biggest.

  • The Welsh Pony and Cob Society is the largest breed registry in Britain, it was established in 1901 by landowners and farmers. The society's membership is worldwide, clearly showing the popularity of the Welsh Pony.
