The Lowchen dog is a unique breed of dog that at one time was a rare breed. From the time they first became a breed of their own thousands of years ago, they were a popular dog well liked by everyone they came in contact with.

At the same time, they are not afraid of a good challenge with their owner, if asked to do something they don't want to do. They can even be strong-willed if the mood strikes them. They can be putting up a struggle with a member of their family and a second later, jump up on their lap. With good basic obedience training, they learn very well what is expected of them.
When children are good to them, they love being around and playing with them. They have a lot of energy and are not afraid to show their affection. They are a very alert dog and not much gets past them. If they see strangers approaching, they will bark and continue to bark to alert their owners. In spite of their small size, they make good watchdogs. They maybe can't do a lot of harm to strangers, but they will give it all they have.
