FT LAUDERDALE, FL

Shih Tzu

The Lakeland terrier, although originally used for hunting, is now a very versatile dog used in the show ring as well as a family pet and companion. If you are thinking of getting a Lakeland terrier, consider some of the characteristics of the dog before deciding if he is the right one for you. You may find this dog is all wrong or that the Lakeland terrier is the perfect choice of dog for you and your family.

The Lakeland terrier is a very courageous dog that used their courage as hunting dogs in pursuit of foxes and otters. If you are looking for a dog to use as a hunting companion, you couldn't make a better choice than what you will find in the Lakeland terrier. Not only do they do the job of hunting with the utmost efficiency, but also they love doing it with you by their side. They are a loving and very loyal companion, whether in the woods hunting or in the home with the family.

People consider many factors before getting a dog as a pet. Deciding on a specific breed of dog also involves different factors. Some of the factors are what location you live in as far as temperatures or if you have a large home or a small apartment. Some dogs require human companionship all the time whereas others can be left alone for long periods. If you are an individual that leads a very busy active life, you will not want a dog that is considered "high maintenance".

The Lakeland terrier is a very intelligent animal that is easy to train. Their personality is cheerful and happy. Shyness or aggression in this dog is very rare, which makes them a perfect selection for a child or children. They are very courageous and will use this courage to protect the family and home when you are there or in your absence.

The Lakeland terrier has a fine coat of hair with minimal shedding making them a perfect indoor dog. They don't need a lot of maintenance other than regular brushing. They do require, however, that their hair be plucked out once or twice a year to get rid of dead hair so new hair can healthily grow in. The seldom need bathing.

They love exercise just like any other dog, but survive very well in apartments. They wouldn't mind a large home and yard, but if apartment life is what they are offered, they adapt very well. This dog is somewhat more difficult to housebreak than other breeds, but is quick to learn other aspects of training. They do require a firm hand in their training. If you don't have the time or experience, it is important that you enroll him or her in a basic obedience class. All things considered, this is a great dog to own, whether as a family pet or just a companion in the woods.
