The Lakeland terrier is a breed of dog that was bred to hunt vermin. Anyone that knows anything about this terrier knows this, too. What many don't realize is just what an extraordinary hunter the Lakeland terrier is. They are brave, bold, energetic and very courageous.

When the Lakeland terrier was first developed and used exclusively for hunting, they were used in the pursuit of foxes. They were so dedicated that many times they would chase a fox underground in their lair and wouldn't give up. There are stories of Lakeland terriers that have gone many feet into underground areas after foxes and had to have the ground blown up just so they could get out. Even this did not frighten them or deter them from their pursuit of the fox, which they would not just capture, but kill as well.

Their hunting ability is not limited to just hunting foxes or protecting sheep. They are also extremely efficient at hunting rabbits, which makes them very popular family dogs for individuals that enjoy hunting small game. The Lakeland terrier is as excellent and efficient on the water as on land, which they've proven many times in their pursuit of otters or badgers. This dog is extraordinary with its hunting ability, enthusiasm and skills.

In the United Kingdom, the mountains and rough ground made it too difficult to hunt for fox on horseback, so they had to do all their hunting on foot. Many believe that this is what made the Lakeland terrier so strong and hardy and built their endurance. Some of the other relative terriers were carried on horseback by the rider until they saw the prey, at which time the dog would be put on the ground. The Lakeland terrier, on the other hand, did all his hunting on foot, a fact which indicates the high stamina, energy, and endurance they possess. The Lakeland terrier is a very intelligent and independent dog. These qualities make a good dog as a family dog, but combine to make an excellent hunting dog.

Their hunting is not limited to in the woods or on the water, as many owners of Lakeland terriers enroll the dog in competitions and hunting trials against other terriers. This dog loves the competition and the chance to do for fun, what they enjoy doing most - hunting and pursuing game.

The Lakeland terrier has a strong and very sturdy body, despite the fact that it is not very big. They have the stamina to keep going when they see their prey. Hunters love using this dog because their hunts are usually successful when this dog is used. Whether it's the dog's courage, stamina or great prey drive, they make every hunting trip a pleasure. The dog never seems to tire of hunting, either.
