German Shepherd Dog

There are many interesting tidbits about the Briquet Griffon Vendeen that makes this breed of dog unique. While most will not have heard of him, he is a loving, fun dog to be around, assuming that you keep him happy. Here are some interesting facts about this remarkable dog that you should know about.

  • The Briquet Griffon Vendeen has bones that are lighter than most other breeds of his size. This may have something to do with the way that the dog was groomed for hunting and tracking. He's a fast dog for sure and ready to head out to do what you want him to do-quickly! What's more, his body is very stocky, almost looking as though it is too large for his smaller, lighter frame.

  • The dog has been developed to be a tracking machine with the ability to raise his nose up into the air, catch the scent of his prey and take off after it nearly instantly. What's more, he is most likely to catch any game that he is after simply because he is that determined to do so. He'll track over sand, hills and even into the water. They are determined and will not take no for an answer. Even though they will track and kill their prey, the Briquet Griffon Vendeen is not aggressive towards people or children.

  • Unlike other dogs that look to their masters as their guardians, the Briquet Griffon Vendeen does not. In fact, he does not recognize his human as his owner from the time that he is born. While he is mostly respectful, it is done on his own terms rather than to benefit or impress his owner. This is evident in day to day life with him. For example, if you do not have a fence around your yard and the Briquet Griffon Vendeen catches a scent, he's likely to take off to tract that scent, even if you are yelling at him to come back. He's also not readily willing to train for tricks, but is obedient in most cases.

  • The Briquet Griffon Vendeen is likely to wag his tail so hard when he's happy that you will wonder if it will fall off! They also have a very vocal personality, willing to tell you just what he thinks in a pleasurable bark.

  • He's also known as the Medium Vendeen Griffon.

  • Your Briquet Griffon Vendeen is going to dig. He loves to dig. A trick to avoid having him dig up an area that you do not want him to is to bury treats or toys in the area where it is okay for him to dig. Keep at it and he'll be happy.

  • These dogs are ideal choices for many homes because they are so fun loving and active. They are not for those looking for a lap dog. They are intense and have a tendency to be a bit snappy when they do not get their way.
