  • The Akhal-Teke is also known as the "gift from the desert" and it was bred for its stamina and speed. It was used by Turkmen nomads. This particular breed of horse also has Persian origins, the name Akhal-Teke wasn't the official name for this breed, and its closest relatives were known by names such as Massaget, Parthian, Nisean, and Turkmene. The word Akhal pertains to an oasis that is along the Kopet Dag Mountains, the word Akhal-Teke refers to the tribe of Turkmen warriors, they were the breeders of this breed of horse.

  • Akhal-Teke Horses became popular as war mounts in the 19th century and on many occasions were sent to Russian Czars as gifts. Later in the 20th century, cross breeding was attempted by the Russians in hopes of improving the breed by crossing it with English thoroughbreds in an attempt to increase its size. The pure Akhal-Teke proved itself by enduring a 2,600-mile race across many different types of terrain. By the end of the race, it was in better condition than other competing horses.

  • Today in modern Russia, owning an Akhal-Teke is a sign of wealth or that you have money to throw around. It's the same as owning an expensive house or car.

  • This breed of horse is known for its sensitive nature and for its propensity for forming strong attachments to their owners.

  • The Akhal has somewhat of a celebrity status to their name. In the 1960 Olympics, a black stallion named "Absent" was awarded a gold medal and a score of 82.4% in Russia for individual dressage and also went on to win 6 more medals. The Akhal that won the 1935 Russian race mentioned earlier was called "Arab," but was really one of famous Akhal-Teke.

  • Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, over 200 purebred Akhal-Teke horses were sent to England and the 15% of these horses were part of the development of racing horses.

  • In Europe today, there is a 30-second commercial being broadcast, which tells about the main symbols of the country, one of which happens to the Akhal-Teke horse. That alone shows the importance of the horse among the people.

  • The horses are not only known for their strength and speed, but they are also known for their size, they can sometimes stand between 15 and 16 hands tall.

  • The colors for this horse can vary usually between bay, black, chestnut, and gray; the most common is pale golden with black points. Some colors appear to "shimmer" or "shine", so some of the color patterns are used to be camouflage in the desert.

  • The Akhal-Teke can withstand conditions and certain situations such as going long periods of time without food and water unlike other breeds.
