  • The American Paint Horse has the characteristics of the western stock but its pinpoint of breeding comes from spotted horses. The American Paint Horse happens to be one of the fastest growing groups of horse in the United States. Since this is one of the fastest growing breeds, it has guidelines and requirements for it to be registered with The American Paint Horses Association (APHA), for example: the mother and father (or sire and dam) must be registered with the APHA. As with the American Quarter Horse Association, only one parent has been registered.

  • The color patterns with the American Paint Horse vary. The most common are white spots with black, bay, dark brown, sorrel, and chestnut. The lesser colors range from spots of gray, buckskin, palomino, cremello, and perlino; along with shades of roan, dun, and grullo. So their paint patterns are put into two different classifications, tobiano, mostly white with dark spots, or the overo, mostly dark with white spots. The distinction can be made by the solid color a tobiano can have on its head, sometimes with a small stripe even. On the other hand the overo is either covered in more black or in more white. In some cases over the years though, there have been American Paint Horses that show characteristics of both classes, in which case a completely different class has been established: the tovero.

  • This horse is considered a "stock horse", a breed that"s strong and has mass, but isn"t too tall. This horse also has a well-built hindquarter, which makes it apt for being quick. They can stand up to 16hh.

  • Unfortunate for this particular breed, the American Paint Horse has a certain genetic problem which makes it vulnerable to other diseases. The main cause of the problem is Lethal White Syndrome; it causes the horse to be more open to illness. Thoroughbred horses are thought to be more prone to another disease called Wobblers Syndrome; it causes the vertebrae to be weak, causing lack of balance.

  • The temperament of this breed is often calm, friendly, and intelligent; which makes them ideal for many types of riders. This breed over the years has also been known to form a deep, bonding relationship with the rider.

  • The American Paint Horses are descendents of Spanish horses that were brought to the United States; they are most famous because they were used by many Indians for war horses. Native Americans believed the paint patterns on these horses possessed magical abilities. They were also favored by cowboys for farm work and other hard labor they could do. Today, these horses are used in many different types of competition, jumping, reining, barrel racing, working cow, endurance, trail competitions, and multi-day events.

  • The American Paint Horse's heritage also ranges from breeds of horse from North Africa and Asia, when they were first brought here, they were a wild breed, being descendants of mustangs and cow ponies. They roamed wide open plains along with wild buffalo and herds of cattle.
