  • Oklahoma State has an American Quarter Horse for their mascot. It's name is the ever popular "Bullet."


  • Denver held the first ever rodeo with Quarter Horses in 1844, this was also the first rodeo you had to pay to get into.


  • In 1967, a horse by the name of "Damascus" won horse of the year. He won the Wood Memorial, Preakness, Belmont, Travers, and Woodward races.


  • The first organized Quarter Horse Race was held in Tucson, Arizona in the year 1930.


  • An American Quarter horse by the name of "King" was said to be the most famous of them all. He was born in June of 1932 and passed away in March of 1938 due to heart failure. As the original seed and the progenitor of the breed, King, along with many of his immediate offspring, was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame.


  • "Diamond Decorator" also known as "Tornado" was on the Disney series "Zorro" in the 1950s. He was a 7-year-old American Quarter Horse, who had won the Grand National's Medal Class along with fourteen other show wins. When "Diamond Decorator" wasn't taking part in "Zorro," he was being used for publicity shots and parades.


  • In 1942, a Quarter Horse named "Texas Dandy" was born; he would also have a career of racing as well as taking part in a film in 1950, "Boy from Indiana." His racing career included fourteen starts, three wins, and a Race Register of Merit in 1947. He also had many offspring that went on to make a name for them including three American Quarter Horse Association Champions as well as many other receiving Race Registered Merits.


  • Perhaps one of the most famous American Quarter Horses of film, television, and literature was "Black Beauty." This horse first appeared in Anna Sewell's novel "Black Beauty" in 1877. Later this horse was made even more well known by the film adaptation of Sewell's novel in 1946, followed by two more films in 1971 and 1994, as well as a television series in 1972. The horse that played the part of "Black Beauty" in the 1994 film was named "Docs Keepin' Time." This horse also went on to star in the film "The Horse Whisperer." He had also starred in the television series "The Adventures of the Black Stallion" which ran from 1990 to 1993. "Docs Keepin Time" went on to win the Silver Spur Award which is the equivalent to an Academy Award, this award is one of the highest that an American Quarter Horse can receive.


  • The American Quarter Horse "Plain Justin Bar" was another horse to win the Silver Spur Award.


  • "Gills Bay Boy," also known as "Scamper," was a World Champion Barrel Racer, which earned him a Silver Spur Award as well.


  • Ridden by Robert Redman, an American Quarter Horse by the name of "Rambo Roman" or "Rimrock" was also used in the movie, "The Horse Whisperer."
