The American Paint Horse is widely recognized by its vivid coat pattern of white and dark pinto spotting. When it comes to the many breeds of the equine world, the American Paint is a fast rising star. A combination of Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred, the requirements for registering this breed with the American Paint Horse Association are some of the strictest of any organization. Over the years, enthusiasts of the American Paint have worked extensively to create a most exclusive stock, putting requirements on blood lines and stipulating very specific traits in the breed's conformation. However, this stringent approach is what makes the American Paint one of the highest quality breeds in existence.

As required by the American Paint Horse Association, an appropriate specimen will have the stock body type that stems from their Quarter Horse heritage. The American Paint is a very athletic horse and should have the traits and characteristics to support such. They are powerfully built with a good equilibrium and many handlers love the breed's uncanny intelligence and spirited demeanor. Though commonly seen in the white and dark splotches, the breed's patterns can come in a number of different varieties. Tobiano is considered the most familiar pattern of the American Paint horse, yet there are other types such as overo or sabino.

The American Paint Horse came about when Quarter Horse enthusiasts decided to create their own organization but were only interested in including specimens with a solid coat. Sometime later, a few individuals decided to create their own organization that honored the American Paint. With its popularity amassing large numbers, the American Paint Horse Association ended up becoming the second largest breed registry in the United States. Any horse registered to the APHA must first have a parent registered in the American Paint, Thoroughbred, or Quarter Horse registries. In addition, the colorful trademark American Paint pattern must be present in some form or fashion.

Traditionally, the breed was a favorite of Indian tribes such as the Comanche. The colorful and varied pattern of the American Paint was considered most sacred by a number of Plains Indian tribes. As the West settled, more and more took an interest in the multicolored breed. It became a symbol of cowboys and the Old West. The breed is often seen and mentioned in a number of cultural references such as books and popular TV shows of the 1950's and 1960's.

This all purpose breed can now be found competing in world class competitions or leisurely trotting down a recreational riding path. There are many equine events held worldwide throughout the year and the American Paint Horse Association also holds many of their own. Whether it's Best of Show or barrel racing, there are a number of events held from one region to another. The regional shows ensure that there is an event for riders of every skill level and age. Theses events not only help raise funds for the organization, they help further educate the public on the breed and its important contributions to American culture.
