  • The Altai Horse originates from Southern Siberia. The Altai Horse is adapted to all year round conditions; it was reared in the Altai Mountains where they had to deal harsh weather conditions on a regular basis. When the Altai is crossbred with Thoroughbreds, they have good performance skills and are usually bigger and stronger. Since they were bred in a harsh environment, when tribesmen and other nomadic natured people raised them, they were bred for their strong heart, hard feet, muscles, and lungs. Since they were indigenous to the mountainous areas, the Altai was used for much trailing.

  • Attempts are being made to develop a breed for producing meat. The Altai is being crossbred with multiple other breeds of horse, the most common are the Lithuanian, Russian, and Soviet Heavy Draught horses.

  • For the first two to four years of the Altai's life, it is raised with herds of other wild horses. This is done so they get used to the life in the mountains and become suitable for mountain trailing later in life. The Altai is so strong by nature that it can carry up to 60 kg of weight or sometimes even up to 150 kg on its back, which is an amazing 330 pounds. The Altai Horse was bred in the Altai Mountains for centuries where they developed their great endurance to poor weather and terrain conditions.

  • When carrying a load, the Altai Horse is equipped when a special kind of saddle, it has two leather luggage bags on the sides. They are traditional Altai style saddles.

  • Nine horses have been claimed by a flu outbreak in Mongolia that took place in October of 2007, and since then 11,601 cases have been reported. A study on the influenza has shown that 50,000 horses are susceptible to the outbreak. The Altai Horse, along with a few others, are particularly in danger of being exposed to this sickness; plans for screening, quarantining, and zoning have already been set in motion to develop a vaccination. China reported a similar outbreak; it is their first since 1994. This is the first report of an outbreak in Mongolia since 2005. This illness has been contained to certain areas.

  • The Altai Horse of Northern Siberia is known for being able to complete trotting tracks in a short amount of time, running tracks in an even shorter amount of time. Such races are conducted where the horse can complete a 3,200 m or two mile race in a remarkable amount of time; by running it completes the race in four minutes, and by trotting it is done in six minutes.

  • Since the Altai Horse originates from the Altai Mountains, it can be found in a few different parts of the continent as the mountains border in China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan further to the south. These mountains are one of the few places left on earth that are untouched by man, so it's what makes the Altai horse somewhat special and in some ways rare.
