  • The Dutch Warmblood is also known as the "Warmblood sport horse" breed. Warmblood in the title is just to differentiate the Dutch from the "cold bloods" and the "hot bloods." It gets its sport horse name from the type of uses that the breed is involved, such as competitive and recreational events, specifically for the international equestrian disciplines of jumping, three day events, dressage, as well as driving. It is a modern sport horse developed from selective breeding of French, German, and English horses.

  • There are actually two different types of the Dutch Warmblood; the two different types are bred for the two variations of land they inhabit. One area is Gelderland which is located in the central Netherlands; the soil is sandy so a lighter Dutch horse is bred. In the other area Groningen where the soil is very thick and clay-like, a heavier and stronger horse is developed. These two types of horses are still very much compatible; in fact Groningen blood is infused with Gelderland to make them much larger. The Hackney Horse was also introduced into the Dutch blood line in order to produce a more stylish horse.

  • The Dutch horse actually has yet another type of horse to the breed; it is a harness horse. It is a unique breed of Dutch horse that is bred specifically to be used in driving competitions and harness horse classes. This harness horse displays a unique trot that makes it the ideal carriage horse; it is usually harness in front of a show carriage.

  • The Dutch Warmblood was bred with Thoroughbred stallions as well as some horses from France, Holstein, and Hanover. As a result of all this cross breeding, the Dutch Warmblood of today is distinguished into three different classes of horse in the KWPN studbook: the sport horse, the harness horse (as mentioned earlier), and the traditional Gelderland horse. As for other breeders, they are still breeding these horses in the traditional style to get the Gelderland light draft horse.

  • The Dutch Warmblood was known as Tuigpaard in its native land when it was developed over 100 years ago. Dutch Warmbloods are horses that continue to evolve through the ages.

  • The Dutch Warmblood is known for being quite the winner; actually, they have become pretty famous for it. They are exported to many different areas of the world and have won events under the flags of many different countries. They have won such flags in international competitions and even the Olympic Games. But they became most famous because of their charm, good conformation, beauty, and the key to their second success in their life, their athletic ability. They gained a lot of praise for their high marks in dressage competition; they are one of the most successful horses bred in Europe after the war. Marius, who also sired well known Milton, is one of the Dutch horses that made them recognizable. He let the world know that the Dutch Warmblood has quit the jumping ability in competition. The Dutch horse has actually quite the list of successors, some of these names include; Pop Art, Lucky Boy, Black Ice, and Ubis, all who have made names for themselves and the breed in numerous events.
