  • The Gypsy Vanner horse as you might be able to tell from the name was developed by the Gypsy culture; they envisioned this horse over a half a century ago. The Gypsies are well known for their love of horses, so they developed a horse that was incredibly strong as well as beautiful. This horse is known for its great docile temperament; it is actually believed to be the best-behaved and most gentle horse in the world. The Gypsy people have a rule about their horse's temperament, as it is often around children. They cannot show any hostile behavior or they will be banned immediately. The ideal Gypsy horse is strong, docile, intelligent, athletic, colorful, and has the best endurance.

  • This horse is actually the status symbol of the Gypsy community, they are of great value to the Gypsy people and as some horses are, they are very limited in numbers. The fillies used in the breeding process are carefully selected and sometimes must be imported as they are from the world's finest blood lines. These horses are selectively bred for many reasons; one of these reasons happens to be so that they match the caravans they very often pull for the Gypsy community.

  • These horses are very unique in appearance; they have long flowing manes and tails also with a feather like appearance on their legs. They are unmistakable in these qualities, they are known for looking like they are flying when they run because of these qualities.

  • The Gypsy Vanner is mainly European in origin and even though it has been bred for over 50 years; it has just recently been brought to the United States. It was in 1996 that the United States's first registry was established with only two horses under its wing and fourteen more later added. The registration was started by Dennis and Cindy Thompson; their main goal or mission of the registration was "to bring honor, recognition, and a better understanding to one of the world's most colorful and least understood societies and the horses they so dearly love." Though they only started off with sixteen of these rare horses, they have successfully bred seventy new ones and they have also started a trend; other breeding farms have taken notice of these beautiful horses and they began breeding the Gypsy Vanner. Besides the original breeding farm, there are four other major ones throughout the country; Gypsy Gold, Wild Creek Farm, El Brio Vanner, and Rock ranch.

  • The main horses behind the blood line foundation of the Gypsy Vanner are horses such as the Clydesdale, Shire, Friesian, and Dales. The combination of all these horses has contributed to the long flowing locks of the Vanner horse. For a horse to be considered a real Gypsy Vanner and to earn a place in the Gypsy Vanner Society of North America, it must pass a DNA test. Though the Gypsy Vanner comes in a variation of color, the most common are Piebald, which is black and white; the other is Skewbald, which is brown and white. Although, horses that have more white in their colors are considered "fancy" by the Gypsy people which means they are all around more valuable.
