Every dog has his or her own temperament. Part of it is in their genetics, but a large part of it is in the training the dog receives from the time they are young puppies. The Bouvier des Flandres is a dog with a great temperament, but they can be dominant in their household or they can be calm, submissive, and gentle. The training they receive from a young age will help to steer them in the right direction towards becoming the perfect family dog.

They are a large dog that may intimidate many people, but they have a gentle disposition. They are fearless and will do anything they need to protect their family, but they are also very even-tempered. Many owners of Bouvier des Flandres dogs say the dog seems to know the difference between aggressive and non-aggressive behavior towards them and will react accordingly. There are not a lot of dogs with this quality. The Bouvier des Flandres is a one-of-a-kind dog.

The Bouvier des Flandres is an intelligent breed of dog that is very easy to train and will remember what they are taught. This dog should be socialized early in life so they don't become too shy or too aggressive. They do need to have consistent training and respond well to gentleness coupled with firmness. They are a dog that will try to dominate the household if they are allowed. They need to be shown regularly and firmly that you are the boss and always will be the boss. Once this has been established, the Bouvier des Flandres becomes a great guard and watch dog as well as companion.

They love children and get along great with them. When they are raised with young children in the home, they become constant companions to them and guard them with loyalty and protectiveness. They are wary of strangers and will usually not let strangers near the children in their home. They make an excellent household dog, and shed very little hair. They seem to know their place and will adapt to whatever life they are given in their home.

They don't always get along with other animals that are not dogs, but with socialization, they get along well with other dogs in the house and neighborhood. Many of them even get along well with cats. Much of this has to do with each individual dog and what their temperament and characteristics are. Most of the time, when they grow up with these other dogs or animals, they do learn to adapt to them being in their home.

The Bouvier des Flandres has the perfect temperament for basic obedience training. They love to learn and do things with their owners. There is no greater joy to this dog than going for a walk with their owner. They love playing with the children as well and thoroughly enjoy playing catch. Their calm and gentle spirit makes them great playmates for children. At the same time, their loyalty, which is second to none, makes them the perfect watchdog for the family. They are truly one of the most multi-functional dogs you can own for your family to enjoy.
